Good 8vo, 5 3/4" x 8 3/4", red cloth over boards, embossed gold title to front and spine, embossed gold instruments to front. Inscription in blue ink to back of half title that reads: "Numbered Copy 84 to Mr. Adrian Newman El Cerrito. 6 Calif. U.S.A. Philip J Bone London Dec 24.56."  Mild shelfwear and heavy rubbing to corners, head and tail heavily rolled, pages are heavily sunned, glue binding is loose towards the middle of the text block, otherwise bright and unmarked throughout. 388 pp. Replete with numerous black-and-white illustrations and extracts from original compositions. Includes an Author's Note To The First Edition, an Index and an added typed line that has been glued in at bottom of Music section that reads: "Errata Page 21 line 15 read March 26, 1827. " 38 " 28 " 1876".  Excerpt from Author's Note To The First Edition: "...if the work should be the means of attracting strangers to the subtle charms of the guitar and mandolin, should encourage or stimulate present devotees, then my years of pleasant labour will not have been in vain." Truly this book was written with the utmost love and respect for the guitar and mandolin, which were not as valued in the first half of the century as they are today.
