The New Horny Pictures Author: Gilbert & George Publisher: White Cube Release Date: 2001 Seller Category: ART EXHIBIT CATALOGS Qty Available: 1 Condition: Used: Excellent Sku: 00685 Notes: Near Fine First Edition SIGNED in ballpoint pen by both artists, "Love from Gilbert, x & George, x," oblong quarto, 11 3/4" x 16 1/2," unpaginated 12pp. Sixteen works reproduced in full color. Saddle-stapled giant brochure-catalog with yellow pictorial wraps from exhibition at London gallery White Cube, 2001. Clean and tightly bound, some minor signs of wear one crease/bend at the open edge, otherwise pristine. Gilbert & George work gay male personal ads into primary arrays, and as always, Gilbert & George insert themselves into the tableau. The result is a rigid grid wherein all the vulnerability, fantasy, and delusion around taboo love and sex becomes startlingly clear. Gilbert Proesch (1943-) and George Passmore (1942-) met in art school in 1967, and have been making dynamic, confrontational concept and pop art ever since. They invented a now-common trope by painting themselves to look like statues and performing robotic songs as "singing sculptures," blurring the lines between life and art. Their philosophy is that no topic is off-limits, whether it's politics or pooping. They steal from British royal iconography's crests and primary color palettes, stuffy corporate personae, and labor movement imagery. Scarce in the States, especially signed. Heavy and oversized items may require additional shipping.
